Buy Natural Sunscreen
Exposure to the sun has been reported to be responsible for up to 90% of the visible signs of ageing and is also known to contribute to skin cancer. Since it’s not possible to avoid being out in the sun altogether – especially in our hot climate and outdoor Aussie lifestyle, some form of protection from the harmful sun rays is essential. +
The traditional way to protect against damage from painful sunburn is to apply a chemical sun cream. However, this is now known to be damaging to the environment and possibly harmful to our health so many people are turning to natural sunscreen as a safer alternative.
The Problem with Chemical Sunscreen vs Natural
There are two types of sunscreen:
- chemical sunscreen that contains ingredients which absorb harmful UV rays before they penetrate the skin
- physical (or natural) sunscreen that forms a barrier against UV rays.
The first is the traditional and most widely used type. Unfortunately, chemical sunscreen contains ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, homosalate, octinoxate and octocrylene that are particularly dangerous for ecosystems and contribute to damage such as the bleaching of coral reefs.
It is estimated that 14,000 tons of sunscreen go into the oceans every year and have a significant adverse effect on marine life. The problem is so serious that Hawaii has recently banned the sale of sun products that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate and is seems likely that others will follow suit.
Although chemical sunscreens are effective in blocking the harmful effects of the sun, they do have some disadvantages besides their harmful effect on the environment. They tend to wash off in water, even those that are labelled waterproof although to a lesser degree, and need to be reapplied frequently. And some of the chemicals are known to be hormone disrupters that can be absorbed by tissue and cause health problems while some fragrances and other additives can have a damaging effect.
Features and Benefits of Natural Sunscreen
This type of sunscreen contains ingredients that are formed naturally — titanium dioxide and zinc oxide — and which block the sun rather than absorb it. Because of this, they don’t break down in the sun in the same way as chemical sunscreens and so don’t need to be reapplied as frequently. And since they’re not absorbed into the skin, they’re less likely to irritate sensitive skin and are more suitable for people with skin conditions such as eczema.
Because they have to be absorbed into the skin, chemical sunscreens aren’t effective immediately and need to be applied fifteen to twenty minutes before going out into the sun. Natural sunscreens, however, form a physical barrier on top of the skin and so are effective immediately.
Many people have been reluctant to buy natural sunscreen because its thick consistency made it difficult to apply and left the skin looking white and pasty. Now, however lots of improvements have been made which means it is much easier to apply and is almost clear in use. Buying our natural sunscreen will, therefore, keep you looking great with maximum sun protection and prevent harm to the environment at the same time.
Natural Sunscreen and the Environment
By using a sunscreen made with natural ingredients (instead of a chemical sunscreen), you’re doing your bit for the environment. Here are a few environmental reasons for choosing the natural option;
Animals at Sea. Chemicals that are used in sunscreen – such as oxybenzone – are known to cause harm to animals. If you go for a dip after putting on some sunscreen, a fair amount of it will be washed off your skin which makes marine animals in the ocean more vulnerable to these harmful chemicals.
Coral and Plants. On top of being problematic for the health of all animals, these chemicals have also proven to heavily impact coral reefs and other plant families in the ocean. As a result of corals becoming contaminated, fish are running out of food sources and this is causing determinantal damage.
Switching to a sun protection product that contains none of these chemicals and, instead, just natural ingredients is better for your own health as well as that of the environment.
Reasons to Buy Natural Sunscreen
At Wholesome Hub, we aim to provide products that are good for the environment and good for you. Apart from being better for your health, there are so many other reasons to buy natural sunscreen and we’re going to share some of them with you;
Safe for Children. Lots of people are unaware of how harmful the chemicals in your typical bottle of sunscreen can be to children, even the ones that are designed specifically for their skin. Natural ingredients offer just as much protection without these harsh chemicals so you don’t have to worry.
Protection While Swimming. Unlike chemical laden sunscreen products, our natural suntan lotion won’t wash off your skin when you go swimming. You’ll continue to be protected from the sun while you relax in your pool, or at the beach, and your natural sunblock will continue to protect you without the need for a fresh application after you’ve dried off.
